PU announces countrywide online poetry, essay writing competitions

LAHORE: The Punjab University has announced to conduct ‘All Pakistan online poetry and essay writing Competition-2020’ for providing healthy and creative activities and to engage all the communities members who are staying at homes due to countrywide lockdown.

Owing to the current pandemic situation which is adversely affecting the mental health and efficiency of the people as a deep sense of depression and anxiety prevails in the country.

At present scenario of lockdown and availability of ample time in isolation could be positively used for creativity and literary work for those who have the skill and flair for literary writing.

This contest would be unique in its nature in which all-out efforts are being made to neutralise the negative impact, fear and anxiety of coronavirus and exertion to engage the general people in positive activities.

Talking to Daily The Business, PU spokesperson Khurram Shahzad said that all competitions are being conducted on the directions of PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmad. He said that various departments of PU had launched online competitions and free courses in order to provide a platform for mental well-being and good physical health of the people. He added that PU Directorate of Student’s Affairs, besides countrywide Qiraat and Naat competitions, has also announced poetry and essay writing competitions.

To a question about eligibility criteria to participate in the competitions, the spokesperson said that people from all walks of life from the entire country can take part in this online contest. He said that there were two age-wise categories of the participants i.e. less than 25 years and above 25 years.

Shahzad said that topics in both English and Urdu languages for essay writing have been announced for English; which are included; Status of women in Islam, Kashmir—Prospect of peace, CPEC as an economic corridor in the region, the menace of corruption and accountability in Pakistan and what is wrong with our education?

Similarly, the Urdu essay writing topics are selected including Fikre Iqbal and Aaj Ka Pakistan, Pakistan key Taleemi Masail, Masla Berozgari or is ka hul, Azad Sahafat, Hudoodo Quyood, and Qumi Yukjehti, Waqt ki eham zarorut.  

The PU spokesman expressed that the contest would be held in two categories Urdu and English essay writing and it should be of 2,500 to 3,000 words preferably. The essay would be evaluated on the basis of the relevancy of the topic, quality of content, vocabulary and observance of standards rules of essay writing.  The copy and plagiarism wouldn’t be acceptable and the decision of the Judges would be final.

The cash prizes of Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 would be awarded among first, second and third respectively to the winners of each category. He urged that every citizen possessing potential and skills of literary writing can participate online in all these competitions.

The candidates can apply online and send their literary work in PDF latest by May 10, 2020. They can also apply through social media channels of Punjab University to take part and get further details of topics of poetry and essay competitions.
