IGP puts weight behind election security at RPOs moot

LAHORE: Inspector General of Punjab Police Dr Syed Kaleem Imam on Tuesday made it clear to the field police formations that it would ensure transparent elections in a peaceful environment, asking all his regional police officers and the district police officers to constitute security plan for polling day under their own supervision.
He said the code of conduct of elections devised by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should be followed strictly and ensured in any case.
There should be no delay in action against the persons who violate rules and regulations and if any police officer or official is found partial at any place he/she will be readying for a strict and exemplary action.
IGP Imam uttered those words while addressing the all nine RPOs via video link conference at the Central Police Office.
He said political candidates should be provided security and also resources should be utilized to make security arrangements for upcoming election processions, corner meetings and other political congregations.
Imam moreover said all RPOs and DPOs should pay visits to the areas of their police stations to ensure peace, adding the process of monitoring and checking exit and entering points should be ensured strictly.
The IG further said crackdowns against criminals and anti social elements should be boosted up and operations under supervision of DPOs to arrest criminals involved in terrorism murder, dacoity and ransom.
He directed the senior officers to protect wealth and lives of people, adding display of weapons and aerial firing would be strictly banned during the election campaign and action without discrimination would be taken against those who would violate the law.
The IG advised the senior officials to avoid affiliation with any political party and said the police job is to conduct free and fair elections peacefully in the province.
“Special security measures should be taken for voters and particularly for the security of sensitive polling stations on the election day.”
He said special plan should be laid for the patrolling forces including dolphin, PERU, and other patrolling forces.
Imam also ordered strict checking of vehicles and citizens on inter provincial border check posts to ensure safety and security of the citizens.
He further said notorious criminals should be dealt with iron hand and strict action should be taken against the ones who are supporting such criminals, adding all Chinese and other foreigners should be provided security on the priority basis without any negligence.
The meeting was attended in person by Additional IG Establishment Azhar Hameed Khokar, Additional IG Elite Shahid Hanif, Additional IG Special Branch Farooq Mazhar, Additional IG CTD Rai Tahir, Additional IG PHP Kanwar Shah Rukh and DIG Operations Sajjad Hassan Manj and others.
