‘86.7pc of university faculty shows no confidence in higher education policies’

LAHORE: Around 86.7 per cent of the elected body representatives of every academic staff associations of all Pakistan universities have expressed dissatisfaction over the current policies over the current policies in the higher education sector of Pakistan, revealed a survey conducted a day earlier.

An online quick survey to enable the faculty members to provide feedback on the performance of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), was conducted by the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPASA) here on Saturday.

The President of FAPASA, Dr Sohail Yousaf told The Business that five questionnaires were circulated among over 30,000 faculty of almost all public sector universities of Pakistan. He stated that the survey was distributed electronically to the faculty members of all universities across Pakistan. Out of the total, around 6,829 faculty across Pakistan participated in the online survey which continued for three consecutive days. He stated that the FAPUASA received an overwhelming response where 6,829 faculty members participated in the survey.

In this regard, five questions were shared which included as question one: are you satisfied with the current policies in the higher education sector? In question two; are you satisfied with the performance of current Chairman Higher Education Commission Islamabad? In the third question; do you consider the concerned stakeholders are being consulted by federal HEC and provincial HEC on important policies in the higher education sector? Four; whether you accept or reject proposed Amendments in Universities Act in Punjab and other provinces? Five; based on performance, should current Chairman HEC complete his tenure? In the response of all five questions, three scale options were suggested to answers the questions i.e Yes/No/Don’t know.

According to statistics, around 86.7% representative elected body members of public sector universities were dissatisfied over the current policies in higher the education sector of Pakistan while only 9.6% were satisfied with the higher education policies.

It was revealed that 75.7% of respondents showed dissatisfaction over the performance of the current chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) as compared to 14.4% showed satisfaction over HEC chairman performance.

It further revealed that 63.2% of participants said that the current chairman should not complete his tenure on the performance basis while 21.8% of the view that Chairman HEC should complete his tenure and 15% said that they did not know, responding to 3rd question of the survey.

The survey revealed that 77.2% of the participants rejected proposed amendments in acts of public sector universities of Punjab. On the other hand, 7.1% supported the proposed amendments in the universities Acts while 15. 7% of faculty said that they did not know.

Meanwhile, All Pakistan Tenure Track Faculty Association, APTTA through a statement, fully supported the legitimate demands of FAPUASA. According to the declaration Joint Action Committee of APTTA, has severely criticized the attitude of current HEC leadership towards the concerned stakeholders.
