New Currency Note: SBP 8877 SMS Service termed as fake, sheer wastage of time, money

LAHORE:  Citizens have termed the new banknotes 8877 SMS service of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) as fake and sheer wastage of time and money as the designated branches reached their limit of booking the very next day of its commencement, Daily The Business has learnt.
The service was initiated on Sunday (May 19) and was mandated to provide wide range of the public the new currency notes till May 31 on the eve of Eid-ul Fitar. However, the service failed to accommodate the citizens who ever sent their ID card numbers to the SMS service 8877 even on the second day of the Service Monday (May 20).

The service replied with the messages including “Dear Citizen, we regret to inform you that this branch has reached its booking limit. Please select any other nearest e-branch.”
The second message that was received by the user of the service received was “Dear Customer, you message format is incorrect please send CNIC  <  > Branch ID to 8877. For further information visit SBP website at www.sbp.org.pk
Muzamal Nasim said, a customer and a resident of Ghari Shahu said, “I used over Rs 300 Jazz and Ufone balances for messaging on 8877 service to get the new currency notes for my kids but I received the two messages,” “The service replied with the messages including “Dear Citizen, we regret to inform you that this branch has reached its booking limit. Please select any other nearest e-branch.”

The second message that was received by the user of the service received was “Dear Customer, you message format is incorrect please send CNIC <    > Branch ID to 8877. For further information visit SBP website at www.sbp.org.pk
“This is a fake service as on May 19 it is initiated for ten days and the very next day it started delivering messages like the branch has reached its booking and the format is in correct,” he said.
“The service is sheer wastage of time and hard earned money as I sent the message to service for 94 times to different nearby branches of the banks and surprisingly I received the same two message,” Shaugufta Naz, a house wife, resident of Ichra said.
A branch manager of Allied Bank Limited (ABL) on the condition of anonymity told this scribe that customers have been complaining that the service has failed the very next day of its commencement on Monday May 20.
On the other hand, an MCB bank regional head complained that the banks have been authorized unreasonably low quantity of the fresh currency notes for the designated branches.
Every designated branch is delivered just ten bundles of Rs 10
denomination. Each bundle contains 10 copies. The total of 10×10 = 100. In such conditions the service users can receive the message  “Dear Citizen, we regret to inform you that this branch has reached its booking limit,” the regional head said requesting not to be named.

Where do the billions of rupees new currency notes mostly go to?
A senior HBL bank disclosed that the central bank prints billions of rupees new currency notes on every Eid but the notes seldom reach to the customers and citizens and this time all the records have been broken.
“The new currency notes is managed by a very powerful mafia who earns billion by selling the new notes in open market which are used in making garlands and in the upcoming season of marriages,” he disclosed, adding that the people traditionally feel proud by throwing
notes on the grooms and bridles on their marriages.
When this scribe contacted SBP chief spokesperson Abid Qamer was not available despite several attempts.
