More than 10 children abused every day in Pakistan in 2018: Report

LAHORE: As many as 3,832 children sexually abused cases have been reported across Pakistan in 2018, cases of child abuse increased by 11 percent as compared to 2017, over 10 children suffering some form of abuse every day in the country, a report released by a NGO Sahil has revealed.

According to data, a total of 3,832 child abuse cases were reported by newspapers in all four provinces out of which 2,403 cases in Punjab, 1,016 in Sindh, 130 in Federal Capital, 145 in KP, 98 in Baluchistan, 34 in AJK and six in GB during the year of 2018.
The data revealed that 2,094 girls and 1,738 boys were reported victims of sexual exploitation in which major categories were abduction 923, rape 537, sodomy 589, gang rape 156, gang sodomy 282 and 552 cases of attempt of CSA. Whereas, 26 boys and 23 girls had been murdered after committing sexual abuse.

There were more horrible incidents in which 10 boys and nine girls were murdered after gang sodomy and rape out of which 452 children found missing from their homes. There were 130 cases of early child marriage and 12 of Vani cases. The acquaintance with victims and victims’ family were the highest number in the list of perpetrators of CSA. The statics showed that out of total 3,832 there were 1,787 cases where the abusers had acquaintance with victims or victim’s family whereas 410 cases were reported in which strangers were involved in abusing children.

The data further revealed that age of both victims boys and girls of CSA were reported 259 between ages of 1-5 years, 701 of 6-10 years, 586 of 11-15 years and 128 of 16-18 years. Moreover, in 2,327 cases were reported in which the age of victims was not mentioned in newspapers. out of which 468 children were abused in their own places, 886 at acquaintance’s places, 18 children in haveli, 46 children in madaris, 19 children at workplaces and 544 children in open places.
The data further expressed that in 2018, some 3,307 incidents reported to Police and 39 cases weren’t reported to police in which 56 cases police did not register whereas 430 cases were reported in newspapers with incomplete information.
As many as 148 incidents reported in Lahore last year in which 21 children had been abducted and 38 reported missing in 2018. This year reported cases under major categories with reference to Lahore were rape 22, sodomy 15, gang rape 10, and gang sodomy seven.

In the end, the NGO has also given some recommendations to prevent sexually abused cases; an effective awareness campaign for the protection of children from this evil, introduce new legislation, where necessary, and make sure the implementation of enforced enactments and a comprehensive rehabilitation/support system for victims of abuse. The report further recommended that a protection messages should be included in curriculum and provision, of “Provincial Plan of Action against Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation”.
