Cultural practices of D.G Khan

Dera Ghazi Khan ‎is the organisational centre of Dera Ghazi Khan Division. Majority of the people are poor but they have been ruled by the rich landholders and chiefs of Baloch tribes which played a major role in the nationwide and provincial politics. Nearly 99 percent population in this area is Muslims and 42.16 percent Saraiki-speaking.
Occupation of the people is not specific; they are farmer and laborer because they are unskilled and doing manual work. They are not highly educated due to lack of resources and poverty. People typically costume Shalwar and Kamez. The people follow their Saraiki culture and customs in their marriages and other events. In marriages, they celebrate their events as Mehndi, Jagga, Barat, and Valima. The Saraiki people are courteous and honest that is more productive and meaningful to their lives. Every culture has some positive and negative practices. So there are also some positive and negative points of Saraiki culture.
Positive health practices of the people are hard working and have their own farmlands and work as a labourer on land which makes their mind and body sound. These habits help out to maintain their physical health. They are self-dependent, they believe “Allah help those who help themselves”. The second positive health practice of this area is, they are simple like to eat simple food and did not take any fast or junks food in their diet. These habits prevent them from many diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc.
Negative health practices of this area are the women are not allowed to get the treatment of that issue which is related to their femininity by a male doctor. The second negative health practice of the people is that mostly they are not educated. Lack of education is the basic cause of the poverty of these people. Due to the lack of education, they involve in wrong health practices.
The Social Determinates of Health (SDOH) model creates social and physical environments that promote good health for all. This model explains the social and physical changes in the environment can help to change the attitudes of the people regarding their wrong health practices. According to the social determinates of health model, there are five steps to changes the people attitude regarding the wrong health practices that present in their cultures.
First of all for making a change in the attitudes of the people needs to make them economical stable. Providing an opportunity of employment to masses is by improving their economic condition. The next step is education. Raising the level of education is the most important for the improvement of health conditions.
The next step is social and community context development. For the awareness of the health-related issue need interventions at the community level. The next is health and healthcare for the people of this area by health awareness and providing primary health services, we can change the behavior of people. The last step of the social determents of health model is neighbourhood and built environment. It includes access to foods that support healthy eating patterns and built a healthy environment. The environmental conditions and quality of housing are important as related to the neighborhood because the sanitation has a great effect on health issues.
The (SDOH) model tells us how we change people mindset and behaviour towards wrong health practices. The strategies to improve people wrong health practices. Provide education to the people about women health issues and the importance of hospital.
