SEOUL: Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s biggest carmaker by sales, said Thursday it will launch the Genesis G90 flagship in the domestic market later this month, followed by a U.S. release in the first half of 2019.
The refreshed G90 sold under the Genesis brand at home and abroad was revealed to reporters at the model’s unveiling event in southern Seoul.
“The company is planning to introduce the G90 sedan in the United States in the first half of next year. And it is considering launching Genesis models in Europe and China,” Hyundai Vice President Woo Chang-oan in charge of the Genesis Project Management Center told reporters after the event.
Genesis brand models, composed of the G70, G80 and EQ900 (now G90), are being sold in Korea, the U.S., Canada, Russia and the Middle East. Genesis brand cars have yet to advance to Europe and China.

In the January-September period, Genesis vehicle sales rose 1.2 percent to 60,093 units from 59,370 in the year-ago period. But G90 sales plunged 42 percent to 7,902 from 13,709 during the same period, according to Hyundai.
The G90 sedan is a face-lifted model of the EQ900. The EQ900 was launched in 2015 as a successor to Hyundai’s Equus sedan.
The G90 will go on sale in Korea on Nov. 27. The company plans to accept preorders for the luxury sedan from Monday, Hyundai said in a statement.
It comes with three gasoline engine versions, a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated engine, a 3.3-liter turbo and a top of the line eight-cylinder 5.0-liter power plant.
The rear-wheel drive models of the sedan are all equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The detailed prices of the cars depending on trim will be announced later this month, a company spokesman said. The rough starting prices of the cars range from 77 million won (US$68,700) all the way up to 119 million won.
The G90 underwent major design changes and now features a wide and deep crest grille, quad headlamps, 18-inch or 19-inch multi-spoke wheels and mufflers that resemble the crest grille, he said.
It boasts of the most advanced safety features that have appeared in Hyundai and Kia vehicles. They include rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, forward collision-avoidance assist, safe exit assist and lane following assist, the statement said.
