PHEC to uplift standards, quality of higher education, says Dr Nizamuddin

Grant for Indigenous Post-Doctoral Fellowship Programme

LAHORE: The Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) is going to introduce the first-ever ‘Indigenous Post-Doctoral Fellowship Programme’ for the PhD faculty members of the public sector universities/higher education institutions (HEIs) in Punjab.
This programme is specially introduced for the faculty members especially females and who do not find a chance to get such opportunities abroad and through this programme, a significant number of indigenous, than that of foreign, aspirants of post-doctoral fellowships will be funded.
The faculty members from underdevelopment areas will be encouraged and give them preference for post-doc programme.
These views were expressed by the Chairperson PHEC Prof Dr Muhammad Nizamuddin while talking to Daily The Business in his office here at Arfa Software Technology Park, Lahore.
Since its inception, the PHEC has been working extensively on implementing various faculty development programmes to improve the quality of teaching and research in the Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) of Punjab including allocation of funds for the award of foreign PhD scholarships, foreign Post-Doctoral Fellowships, International Travel Grants (ITGs) etc.
Now, PHEC has taken another step to further this goal by announcing the “Research Grants for Indigenous Post-Doc Fellowships” to the faculty members of public sector universities and colleges of Punjab
Dr Nizamuddin said that the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) has always envisaged maximising the learning and career advancement opportunities for the faculty members of public sector universities/HEIs
Dr Nizam further maintained that this is the first-ever initiative taken in Punjab to locally train our scholars and hone their research skills at local universities and research institutes of Punjab.
“Through this programme, funding of up to Rs1 million will be provided for each project/proposal submitted,” he added.
“This programme will help to create a pool of qualified researchers and academicians, at par with the international standards, and will encourage a research culture in Punjab” Dr Nizam further said.
The Spokesperson PHEC Shahid Imran told this scribe about the eligibility and selection criteria for the Indigenous Post-doctoral Programme.
“The duration of the fellowship will be 12 months while all the PhD regular faculty members, not older than 52, having Pakistani/ AJK nationality, teaching at public sector universities in the province of Punjab.
, who have not availed any post-doc fellowship in last five years will be eligible to apply for the programme,” Imran said.
He further asserted that PHEC will support by every mean to improve the standards and quality of higher education and research in the province.
“We are more committed to bring quality rather than the quantity in the higher education sector,” he said.
The PHEC has split this programme into two phases whereas in the first phase as Selection of Research Supervisors have been identified.
The PHEC would invite applications/proposals for Research Grants for Indigenous Post-Doctoral Fellowships (12 months) from senior faculty members having Post-Doc in the social sciences discipline through their respective institutions.
The PHEC Research Grant Selection Committee will select 12 research proposals through a rigorous evaluation process.
The successful candidates, whose proposals selected, are the research supervisors for the implementation of the grants as well as the supervisor of the Post-Doc fellows.
Moreover, in the second phase after the selection of Research Supervisor, “Indigenous Post-Doctoral Fellowships” will be advertised against the selected research proposals. The applications will be invited for Indigenous Post-Doc and shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by another Committee headed by the Research Supervisor.
