SAHIWAL: Pakistan is one of the countries having largest livestock population in the world, but the contribution for the economic aspect of the country is far below of its potential and the disease considered one of the major constrain behind this.
Ticks are responsible for severe economic losses both through the direct effects of blood sucking and indirectly as vectors of pathogens and toxins. Feeding by large numbers of ticks causes reduction in live weight gain and anaemia among domestic animals, while tick bites also reduce the quality of hides. However, the major losses caused by ticks are due to the ability to transmit protozoan, rickettsial and viral diseases of livestock. In recent decades, parasitism has remained one of the major problems of dairy industry in Pakistan.
Dr. Samreen Additional Director livestock Sahiwal has said that medical and economic importance of ticks has long been recognized due to their ability to transmit diseases to humans and animals. She said that ticks cause great economic losses to livestock, and adversely affect livestock hosts in several ways. She said loss of blood is a direct effect of ticks acting as potential vector for haemo-protozoa and helminthes parasites. Blood sucking by large numbers of ticks causes reduction in live weight and anemia among domestic animals, while their bites also reduce the quality of hides. She said that major losses caused by ticks are due to their ability to transmit protozoan, rickettsial and viral diseases of livestock.
She said that livestock department striving hard for the control of ticks in livestock population to avoid the risk of any mishap. Talking to the correspondent dr. Samreen said that as per direction of secretary livestock Capt Muhammad Mahmood anti tick activities has started in district sahiwal .
She said in this regard seven check post established at entry points of District Sahiwal which include Qadirabad toll plaza, harrapa toll plaza, qutab shahana toll plaza, Pakpatn road, Arif Wala road ,Iqbal nagar road and boreywala road. Similarly field staff is deputed to carry out anti tick spray and inject aracicidal drugs for eradication of ticks from livestock population. Further staff is deputed at sacrificial animals sale points for spraying ticks infested animals and injecting anti ticks drugs.
